Steve Jobs is busy announcing the new Apple iPhone (or whatever Apple plans to call it) while I watch the event unfold blog-style on MacRumorsLive.com. The phone has an incredible list of features:
- Video
- Music
- Photos
- “Visual” Voicemail
- WiFi & EDGE
- Bluetooth
- Email (autoswitch between imap & pop mail)
- Crazy “Minority Report” style touch screen (not stylus but finger) interface with this weird “unpinch” way to zoom into photos
- Safari web browser
- Google maps
- 2 megapixel (mp) camera
- Widgets
- SMS
Jobs has been talking about the phone for like 45 minutes now stating “this is a revolution of the first order”. I still have to pause, exit the Steve Jobs Reality Distortion Field, and ask myself…do I really need all these features on one device or would all these features just cause me to clog up my day with yet another piece of technology thrown at a problem that really isn’t there? I’ve got a 80 gig iPod, previously had a 15 gig model, and own a Razr phone. I’ve got a laptop, a couple of GPS units (wait, lemme go look to see if the iPhone does real time GPS…nope, hasn’t said so yet) and a Canon Digital Rebel XTi.
Will I ditch all that for the “revolution of the first order” that the venerable Mr. Jobs is still talking about nearly an hour after he began? Probably not. Will I still get the new Apple “iPhone”? Probably so. I’m a sucker for this kind of stuff. That and I’m already a Cingular customer with a contract that expires this year. Yeah, I may be a ranting hypocrite but what the heck - I think I’ll do it anyway :)
UPDATE: Just saw that the battery life is only 5 hours and the prices are HIGH for my blood…8 Gig model = $599 and 4 Gig model = $499 (so why would you ever buy a 4 Gig?). Well, I’ve got until June to think about it…that’s when Jobs says they’ll be shipping the new phones.
