THE SOLUTION TO THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN REMOVED DUE TO NUMEROUS COMMENTS OF NO SUCCESS INSTALLING THE APPS. Please contact Apple directly for assistance with you iPod applications. So, Apple came out with what I’ve been waiting for…Mail, Maps, and Notes for the iPod Touch.
I bought into the hype and tried to buy the software today…to no avail. Here’s what I did:
- Upgraded iTunes to version 7.6.0.29
- Upgraded the iPod Touch to software version 1.1.3
- Went to this iTunes Store link and purchased the software
UPDATE 20081016: Apple has removed the “Buy Now” option for this software. Read more > - Followed Apple’s instructions and clicked the “Synch” button in iTunes and disconnected the iPod Touch
- Waited for my iPod Touch to automatically update…
- Tried steps 1-5 a total of three times
Now, nothing ever came to my “Purchased” folder in Itunes, and I never received and invoice from Apple for the $19.99 software upgrade fee, so I’m hoping I wasn’t charge three times.
Anyone have success with this software upgrade? Anyone have any ideas what I’m doing wrong? Apple doesn’t have any support docs on this…yet.

Update 20080115 16:52: Thanks for your comments folks! I sent off my email to tech support and got the requisite “your call will be answer in the order it was received” message. I dug into my purchase history and found only two purchases of the applications have been recorded so far. Hopefully Apple will reverse one of the charges and help me install the applications.

Update 20080115 18:58: Just registered my iPod since I’d never done that. That didn’t help anything as I expected but I really wanted to get rid of that registration screen I had to click ever time iTunes started up.

Update 20080115 19:25: Just did a reset of my iPod following these instructions. Still no applications on my iPod.

Update 20080115 20:50: SOLUTION TO IPOD TOUCH APPLICATION LOADING ISSUE :)
UPDATE 20081016: Apple has removed the “Buy Now” option for this software. Read more >
Here’s how I got the Applications to load properly on my iPod Touch:
Plug iPod Touch into computer (after you’ve done steps 1-4 from the list at the beginning of this article)BACK UP YOUR IPOD!!! (doing the rest of these steps will erase EVERYTHING from your iPod)Start iTunesClick your iPod’s listing under “DEVICES” in iTunesClick the Summary tabClick the “Restore” button (THIS ERASES YOUR IPOD’S DATA!!!)Wait for the magic to happen…You may need to Register your iPod with a different name than it used to have before the restore and DO NOT USE THE PREVIOUS SETTINGS OR BACKUPS (thanks to Natalia in the comments for that tip!)
For whatever reason, wiping out all the data on the iPod by doing a “Restore” gave iTunes what it was looking for and the applications appeared on the iPod after it restarted itself during the restore process.
Hope this helps some folks!
UPDATE 20080122: I received a nice reply from Apple customer support today, letting me know they had refunded my second purchase of their iPod applications. Here’s the email:
Dear Corey,
This is Pavel. I have reversed the charge for the duplicate purchase, which I understand was unintentional. You will see a credit of $19.99, plus any applicable taxes, in three to five business days. If store credit was used for this purchase, you should see the credit after you sign out of the iTunes Store and sign back in.
In the unlikely event that you receive a download error in the future, please remember that it is not necessary to repurchase items when downloads are interrupted, because the items should still be in your account, waiting to be downloaded. To learn more, follow the steps in this article:
How to resume interrupted iTunes Store downloads
http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n93015You might want to use the built-in Shopping Cart for future purchases. The Shopping Cart is a convenient way to consolidate items you would like to purchase so that you can download them when it’s convenient for you. Plus, the Shopping Cart adds an extra layer of protection against unintentional purchases. Here’s how to use it:
iTunes Store: Using the shopping cart

For application issues, I would suggest you to our Apple technical support (there may be a fee associated with the call). To find the appropriate phone number, please visit:

Thank you for using the iTunes Store. Have a wonderful day.

I’m from UK and I just bought the app pack and it first it did nothing but next time I opened iTunes it said there was an update (1.1.3) and it updated it and boom I have the apps on!
Yea, I tried it, too. It worked like crap. I went through the entire process twice for $40 (2 x $20) and I still don’t have the new apps. My iTunes is also 7.6.0.29 and my Touch, like yours, is 1.1.3.
I called Apple tech support and they had me restore my Touch. Goodie. Now I have re-load all the content on my Touch and I still don’t have the $%#@#%@ applications.
I called tech support a 2nd time and this time they said they’re aware of some problems that most people are experiencing. Maybe tonight. Maybe tomorrow. They don’t know when it will be fixed.
As for my lost money, contact the iTunes store. But they don’t have phone support; only email. So I emailed them - their automated reply says they’ll get back to me in a couple of days.
Nice going, Apple. And just when I was becoming a full-fleged Apple-convert. Apparently testing this software update ahead of time wasn’t on their top-10 list.
Oh, just to aggravate me further - a friend of mind with an iTouch upgraded his - works like a champ. He says the new apps rock. Not that I would know.

i had the same problem. i was double charged for the software update and i still don’t have any new applications on my ipod touch. bummer apple. should have had this down before opening the flood gates.
i just tried the restore advice from above to no avail. it did manage to wipe my ipod :(, but i still do not have the applications (only $40 down the tubes so far).
Brian, try to register your restored ipod as new ipod with new settings. It also didnt work for me first time because after restoring I choose the old ipod settings. Then I gave it new name and it worked!!
good news, i found here, and this works for my ipod touch, bad news, i already tried three times in itunes, so now have $60 bill under my purchase history.
Thank you very much, it worked for me too. Thank God I didn’t pay for it twice, but I’m sorry for those who did. Cheers!
Same problem here. I was charged twice but after an email to apple assistance they’ve refund.
I hope restoring and changing the name will help.
Bad user experience, dear Apple.
I might have the apps on my iPod Touch but to be honest the suck! At least the mail application anyhow. I’ve told it to sync my mail accounts and when updating my iPod it says it’s syncing mail accounts but still nothing on the iPod…
If they’re going to charge for this it should atleast work…
i’m getting an itouch tomorrow with the upgrade
xD
This software should be free and you chumps are paying for it. It is shipping free with the new Touches! Lemmings!
Hey I’m trying to download this, every time I go to the site you said, it opens up iTunes, and goes to the ‘Apps Page’ and theres not download button! Anyone know what I’ve done wrong? I’ve downloaded the latest software update, like it says, but to no avail… Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I’m trying to download too…. wheres the download button?
All i see is “no thanks” and “remind me later”
I got all excited about the app’s and now they wont download :-(
So, uncheck manually manage and check only synced songs. It’ll erase everything when you hit apply. Then afterwards, hit sync again and it will work.
Cheers
I had the same problem!! Dont worry jus restore your ipod!!!!! i did that and it works perfect!!
I tried this suggestion and it worked perfectly!
Yesterday I was charged 3x for this update. I contacted apple through their email and they said they will credit me back the other two charges.
Thanks for the info.
Too bad apple isn’t so quick to solve problems. I guess that is why we have Google :)
John
what email address did you guys email to get your refund? Let me know if possible. Thanks
Bad, bad, bad apple…
You punish early adapters, you make them pay for an upgrade and you store does not work…
You are starting to walk Microsoft’s path.
ps: thanks for the info. Once i restored and renamed it worked perfectly. Thanks
Yeah can anyone let me know where you acually download this from. If I click the link on iTunes it only says “No Thanks” and “Remind Me Later”. Is there a different page?
Levsterrr, looks like you’re out of luck for the moment. Apple apparently took down the purchase option for iPod Touch applications. Have we witnessed an Apple product recall, er…reboot?
Great - I’ve spent all night trying to get this flippin’ upgrade. Now I find out that rather than tell people that the buy option is currently unavailable - they’d rather have me search forums to find out what “I’m” doing wrong. I thought Apple were supposed to be hot on their User Experience. Not that I wasn’t already narked to learn I was going to have to pay for an upgrade in the same month I got my new device.
Anyone sensing I’m not a happy camper?
PS: Bill - all is forgiven. Sorry I ventured to the darkside expecting better.
I have just spent the better part of an hour restarting iTunes, searching help forums, etc. trying to find out how/why I wasn’t seeing a “purchase” option - I, too, am a bit peeved. Why would they not allow further purchases without any notification? I thought something was wrong! UGH!
I too had trouble installing the January Software Update and was getting frustrated. It seems that the real trick is t make sure both your iTunes and iPod software are updated to the latest versions. My iPod touch was at 1.1.2 (I only realized later) and all I had to do was hit the update button in iTunes to get 1.1.3 installed. Once that was done, I finally got my extra applications.
If yours still doesn’t work with the latest updates, it may very well be that your iPod is bugged out and needs to be restored. My iPod touch did catch the flu once and an iPod restore brought it back to normal.
I just spent 2 hours looking for this purchase button, checking forums, wondering why i wasn’t able to buy the applications..its kinda annoying considering there wasn’t anything telling us the option was disabled.
my update worked fine, but i’m wondering, if i restore it, will all yhe new apps be gone?
Just downloaded it about a half hour ago, also didn’t work for me, gonna try backup and restore. Thanks for this post smarfy
Worked first time for me after following advice here (ensuring itunes and ipod were both updated). At first I couldn’t find the ‘buy’ option - only had ‘remind me later’. Then realised my ipod wasn’t connected! Oops! As soon as I connected it, I had the option to ‘buy’.
I restored and everything, do I need to set up as a new iPod ?
I only see an “OK” button to click on the screen. I’ve followed the steps front to back like 100 times.
How do I get the funking apps on my ipod!?!?!
Where do I go to actually buy them??
HELP!!
I was having trouble with this too. In iTunes, I clicked “January software upgrade” but from there it just told me to make sure I had the correct versions of itunes and the ipod software, etc.. There were no options to download or purchase or anything. So, I restored my brand new ipod touch (which I only got about 8 hours ago) …and it worked!!
After the restoration, I went back into iTunes and the “Jan software upgrade” page looked different. There was a new “Go to Software Upgrade” button. I don’t know what happened; my husband did connect my new iPod Touch to his computer (and he already has his own ipod touch) so maybe that’s what messed it up. But anyway restoring it worked for me!
If you restore you will NOT lose your applications. I just restored my firmware to 1.1.3 and at first I thought I had lost my apps but as soon as you sync it up with iTunes again - SYNC not RESTORE or UPDATE, then it also syncs the applications across, so I can confirm restoring will not lose you your applications :D Phew
ok. hi i am only 12 and i restored my ipod touch(its restoring as i type)
MY MUSIC IS GONE
AND I HAVE SPENT WELL OVER $200

how do i get them back,
or can i?
:{

Shane, I’m having exactly the same problem. I’ve written to Apple to ask for help, though I may have to try the restore thing.
I’m downloading it now.. I certainly hope it works..
Guys i had some problems with getting the upgrade too. then i decided to get on itunes gift card. Worked perfectly. I would buy the .card
Mine worked first time, it downloaded, installed and synced within seconds.
Working Great.
ive got a problem, i tried to jailbreak my ipod using Ziphone.
everything worked fine until i noticed a little sign saying if this process takes more than ten minutes, there should be some sort of problem, try reconnecting your ipod (touch) so i pulled the USB device out and now my ipod is stuck scripting tiny white writing. if i try swithing it on and off the scripting just restarts and continues forever.
i cannot reset my ipod or restore it because itunes does not recognise any device. i have an imedia sound system to my ipod and a friend of mine told me i might be able to reset my ipod using it, by pushing some kind of button combination repeatedly ….. anyone know what that is or anything i could do??
Try going to store > authorize computer, it might be a problem with whatever machine the ipod has originally been installed on.
BTW - If you want the upgrade great, if you don’t that’s great too but posting complaints about the 20$ doesn’t help anybody who has any legitimate questions about getting something to install.
