SunRocket Took My Money and Ran

SunRocket

How nice. SunRocket (the VoIP phone service) has ceased operations AFTER they issued me a $214.11 charge for service I had cancelled months earlier. The charge posted to my credit card on June 29, 2007. Here’s the series of email exchanges:

Them (via email after I called their support number and talked with a human):
“Response (MaryAnn - 29741) - 07/03/2007 10:45 PM
As per our conversation today I informed you that I have officially cancelled your account and any credit issued will be issued back to the credit card we have on file.
Customer (Entered by MaryAnn - 29741) - 07/03/2007 10:45 PM You called in today because you wanted to know why you were charged when the account was cancelled.”

Me: “Customer (Corey Scribner) - 07/12/2007 01:26 PM
My credit card has still not been issued a credit for $214.11 for the SunRocket charge on 06/29/07. When will this credit be issued?”

Them: “Response (Patricia - 29281) - 07/12/2007 02:25 PM
Thank you for contacting SunRocket Member Services. Once your account is canceled, our system will automatically calculate any refund due to you. Your credit card on file will automatically be credited in 38 days, from the date that you cancel. Our billing system requires this time frame in order to allow for any unbilled activity or pending credits. This system requirement is to make sure that you are accurately refunded the correct amount due to you. Credits and refunds are applied to the method of payment we have on file. I apologize for any inconvenience and frustration that this may cause. If there is anything else we can do to assist you, please let us know.”

THEM (on their web site): “ALL SERVICES TO BE DISCONTINUED NO LATER THAN AUGUST 5, 2007 “

Great timing SunRocket. 33 days after I called, you went out of business with my $214.11 in your pocket. Give it back.

Is Network Solutions Telling the (SEO) Truth?

Network Solutions Upsells Domain Registration Length for SEOAn open question to all SEO-ers out there…

Is Network Solutions correct when the make the blanket statement “Search engines perceive domain names registered for 5 years or longer to be more legitimate than domain names registered for a shorter term, and therefore rank them more highly.” or are they just trying to upsell us to make more immediate dollars on domain name registrations? Newspaper Sites Versus Blogs: Blogs Win.

Okay, this will inevitably get me a ton of hate mail but that will just go to show the advantage of the interactive nature of blogs versus traditional one-way media like newspapers.

Henry Hill Art on eBay

I just read a brief article on New York Magazine’s web site about ex-mobster, ex-informant, ex-”goodfella” Henry Hill and his paintings for sale on eBay (someone paid $53 USD plus shipping for that one above - seriously). I heard about Hill’s new hobby/business last week on the Howard Stern show and ran out and bought the Goodfellas DVD to watch some of the scenes they were talking about on the radio show. I wanted to make mention of that by leaving a comment on the New York Mag site. But alas, the old world has not fully caught up with the new. While they do have links to post a reference to the article on Digg, Reddit, Del.icio.us, and Furl, there is no “comments” area for me to share my views directly on the article page itself. So we’re forced to write our commentary on spectacularly amazing sites such as this one.

Am I expecting too much? Have I truly joined “generation me“, expecting to discuss all topics when and where I see them? (attention baby boomers & beyond: I’m trying to make money from your ignorance by linking you to Amazon.com using my affiliate account)

The blog has become the defacto way to exchange ideas around the globe. Large media properties like New York Magazine should open their doors to the “me” crowd and let us call it like we see it, right on their digital doorsteps. We’ll be nice, I promise.

Rap Snacks

Okay, that’s a load of crap. But seriously, I just found another somewhat disturbing food product featuring the likenesses of moderately-famous people on the bag — Rap Snacks, “The Official Snack of Hip Hop”. Much like my previous posts (1 | 2) about Magic Johnson’s Showtime Barbeque Sauce, these chips seem to be bound for glory in the mega-discount stores (I found them for 80 cents a bag at Big Lots).

I didn’t try the chips myself, but I did give the family the taste-test challenge. The room was split, with half of the family saying they “aren’t so bad” and the other half making that face you make when you suck on a really sour lemon.

My advice: make a mad dash to your local Big Lots store and pick up a bag of either Dirt McGirt’s Sour Cream & Onion or YoungBloodz Southern Crunk Barbeque before the chips reach their September 5 expiration date (if you’re in the central Denver Big Lots that is) and head for that great chip factory in the sky.

Jerry Lynn Williams - Gone

Bill Bently, Producer Corey Scribner, Bret

Clockwise from left: Bill Bentley, Corey Scribner, Brett “Big Schwag” Wagner, and Peter Colan

My iPod just “shuffled” onto a Heavy Rotation radio show I produced in early 2006, hosted by Bill Bentley & Peter Coplan (owner of the former Heavy Rotation Records in Studio City, CA where we recorded the shows). On show #2 Bill played a track from an unreleased demo tape given to him by Jerry Williams in 1984. The song “Save Your Love” wound out the radio program and Bill told a story about Jerry Williams teaching Jimmy James (AKA Jimi Hendrix) how to sing in exchange for guitar lessons while playing with Little Richard’s band. Hearing that again sent me down a path that lead to a fabulous article by Bill Bently about Jerry Williams in the Austin Chronicle.

If you enjoy music even a little, I encourage you to read Bill’s article. As aways, he’s a wealth of musical history and positive energy. Thanks for yet another great read Bill!

Jerry Williams LP “Gone”“Bill Bentley has bought over 25 copies of Jerry Williams’ Gone for friends, each copy for under $1. He’s still trying to get it reissued on CD.” (Read the Article)

I just ordered my copy for $6.99 on eBay ;)
